Weaving mahampy is deeply embedded within Antanosy customs - ‘Ampy’ means ‘complete’ and is a symbol of solidarity and togetherness.

The metaphor the ‘mat’ appears in proverbs; for example ‘tsihibelambana ny olona’, which literally means ‘people constitute a great, broad mat’, refers to the interconnectedness of humanity, and between the living and our ancestors.
