Our Pioneer programme offers the chance to work on a variety of projects in the field, including construction, community work, education and conservation. Camping in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Madagascar, volunteers get an insight into development work whilst enjoying the adventure of a lifetime.
Typical projects include building or repairing community buildings such as schools and community latrine blocks. You may assist our carpenters to make classroom furniture, deliver health and environmental education, or support our forest conservation and research projects. While the programme is designed as a ten-week scheme shorter periods (from 4 weeks) are available on request. View a sample itinerary »
The opportunity to work with a truly Madagascan organisation like SEED Madagascar created and run by Malagasy residents was unique; I will treasure it foreverSam Beer, Pioneer volunteer
Working with our superb team of local guides, construction team and other specialists, you’ll be involved in the day-to-day work of the organisation in town and in the bush, getting involved where it really matters.
Pioneer can form part of a gap year, provide a break from boring everyday life back home, or even lead to a new career. The programme can also be undertaken as an internship for those wishing to gain experience and/or credit for a college or university course.
With slightly more feedback and a final report; the internship lends itself to those who are joining the team as part of an academic course and particularly those who are aiming to be awarded credits. This will usually need to be approved in advance by your institution and any specific guidelines or documentation passed onto SEED Madagascar. If this is something you are interested in, just complete the online application form and flag your interest in joining as an intern!
Anybody aged 18 or over may apply to become a Pioneer as all required skills are taught. Although being in good physical shape is important, it’s just as important to have a good sense of humour when the going gets tough!
