Madagascar: Discover a new frontier

The SEED Conservation Research Programme (SCRP) is based in the beautiful coastal area of Sainte Luce, southern Madagascar, surrounded by extremely rare fragments of littoral forest. Join us and you will carry out essential, hands-on, conservation research with endemic species including lemurs, bats, chameleons and amphibians, help with community conservation activities, and environmental education.  You will also have plenty of time to explore the coastal village, meet new people, and enjoy the spectacular views!

Volunteer in Madagascar

The forest in coastal Sainte Luce is one of only three significant areas of this forest type left in Madagascar, having been reduced by over 90% in the country. As the forest has both exceptional biodiversity and a local population reliant on it for timber and other uses, our work combines scientific research with community conservation to build knowledge and capacity in the area.

Our current research focuses on biodiversity, collecting data about which species are present, their distribution, density, behaviour and habitats. Study species include frogs, chameleons, lemurs, bats, and many more. The data is used to inform forest management, support the local community, and protect the species concerned. As the wildlife in Sainte Luce area has not been studied much, the research to which you will be contributing is very much on the frontier! Volunteers also help to run regular conservation/environment education classes for school children.

Resd more about our research programme

I am a wildlife lover, so I absolutely loved seeing all the animals! I loved the local people and their culture, boat trips, our breakfast, working with local children and families, walking in the forests, it was beautiful...
