Brighter Together: Earth Raise Campaign

22nd to 29th April

Powering Communities in Madagascar

In Madagascar, in rural communities 90% of people do not have access to electricity. Without electricity, families rely on dangerous kerosene lamps. Children struggle to study. Opportunities are limited.

SEED is proud to be part of Solar United Madagascar (SUM), a collaboration of four charities and a social enterprise working together to expand access to clean, reliable solar energy across rural Madagascar.

For 7 days only every donation will be matched. From April 22 – 29, SEED and SUM are raising £100,000 through the Earth Raise Campaign to support community-led solar initiatives and provide reliable, renewable energy to rural communities that improve education, livelihoods, and climate resilience in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries.

Your support can help:

  • Expand solar-powered learning in schools
  • Improve education and livelihoods
  • Strengthen climate resilience in vulnerable communities

Why This Campaign Matters

Madagascar is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, yet many rural communities still lack access to reliable electricity.

Without affordable energy:

  • Families often rely on costly and hazardous alternatives such as kerosene lamps
  • Children cannot study after sunset
  • Livelihood opportunities remain limited
  • Health and safety are at risk

By supporting this campaign, you are helping to provide clean, renewable energy solutions that enable communities to thrive, while protecting the environment.

What is Solar United Madagascar?

Solar United Madagascar (SUM) is a consortium that brings together five organisations working for Madagascar - SEED, Feedback Madagascar, Money for Madagascar, Solar Aid and JiroVe - with a shared goal to increase access to clean, affordable solar energy for underserved communities.

By working collaboratively, SUM partners combine our expertise to deliver community-based solar solutions, strengthen local capacity, and create lasting impact across rural Madagascar.

SEED’s Role: Project Masoandro

Within the Solar United Madagascar consortium, SEED leads Project Masoandro (“Sun” in Malagasy). The project focuses on strengthening communities, schools, and livelihoods in the Anosy region through sustainable solar technology.

Light Libraries

Since 2023, Project Masoandro has established community-run “Light Libraries”, where households can rent solar lamps and batteries at an affordable daily rate. These Light Libraries improve safety, allow children to study after sunset, and support income-generating activities. Each site is managed by a local franchisee, creating jobs and generating income that also supports local schools.

Digital Learning

Project Masoandro also supports Digital Learning in rural schools through solar-powered tablets loaded with curriculum-aligned educational materials. Teachers receive training to use these digital tools effectively, helping to improve lesson quality and student engagement.

Since May 2023, this programme has reached 24 teachers and over 500 students.

Together, We Can Power Change

With your support, SEED and Solar United Madagascar can continue expanding solar solutions and empowering communities across Madagascar.
