Programme Mampisaina

Programme Mampisaina, which means "make you think" in Malagasy, is a holistic programme aimed at empowering young people with knowledge and skills on sexual and reproductive health, while building a strong foundation for effective gender-based violence response.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Gender-based violence in Madagascar

Gender inequality in Madagascar continues to limit the safety, health, and opportunities of women and girls. Only one-third of girls attend secondary school, with early pregnancy and child marriage driving high dropout rates (UNESCO, 2024). Nearly 40% of young women are married before 18, increasing their vulnerability to violence and economic dependence (The World Bank, 2024).

Access to sexual and reproductive health services remains limited, and social norms often prevent open discussion of these issues, especially for adolescents. Women also face economic barriers, with many confined to low-income, informal work.

These interconnected challenges reinforce cycles of poverty and gender-based violence, making action on GBV and SRHR essential for building safer, more resilient communities.

SEED’s Response

Mampisaina is not a single project, it's a multi-layered two-part programme that strengthens sexual and reproductive health and rights, builds capacity for safe, gender-transformative programming, and supports coordinated responses to gender-based violence. From August 2025, its two components work together to address the interconnected challenges of gender inequality, sexual health, and violence, driving lasting change in the Anosy region.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Component

Delivering comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights education to 1,000+ young people in schools and communities, equipping them with knowledge on STIs, HIV, family planning, consent, and menstrual health. This is the frontline education work that creates informed, empowered young people.

Gender-based Violence (GBV) Component

Running in two integrated phases, this component strengthens SEED's gender-transformative programming (Phase I) while building a clearer picture of GBV challenges in the region and bringing partners together to respond more effectively (Phase II). Together, these two phases create the safe, supportive ecosystem in which SRHR education can thrive.
